　町で大学生らしい若者が歩きながら話しています。
　女：うちのパパ、たばこやめたわよ。
　男：えらいね。でも、どうしてやめたの。
　女：ベランダは寒いからって。
　男：ああ、ほたる族* だったんだね。
　女：そうなの。みんながいやがるから、部屋の中では吸
　　　えないのよ。
　男：なんだか気の毒だな。
　女：でも、やめたほうが体のためよ。ちょっとおなか、
　　　すいたな。
　男：じゃ、このへんでマクる* ？
　女：そうね。あそこはどう？

ほたる族：家族が煙草を嫌うので、部屋の中ですうことができず、マンションのベランダなどに出て吸う人たち。ほとんどが男性で父親や夫。遠くからみると夜の闇の中でたばこの火が光るのでほたるといわれます。昔のようにいばらず、やさしく家族の気持ちを大切にするお父さんたちに同情したことばだと言う見方もあります。

マクる* :若者の中でよく言われる「マクドナルドで食事する」とのことです。

● Hotaru-zoku
Literally translated as “firefly tribe,” this expression refers to smokers who cannot light up inside their homes because of their family’s opposition, and thus have to go outside–such as the balcony of their condo–to have a smoke.
Most hotaru-zoku are men, namely, fathers and husbands. When seen from afar, the glow of cigarettes being smoked outside at night resembles the light of a firefly–hence the name.
Some see the appellation as being sympathetic to today’s fathers, who, unlike family heads in the old days, refrain from being domineering and kindly respect the wishes of their family.

● "Makuru"
Iincluded this example of recent youth expressions in this month’s dialogue. It means “to eat at a McDonald’s restaurant.”
